On Nov. 6, volunteers with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Vernon County Sheriff's Office conducted alcohol compliance checks on 15 businesses in Vernon County who have licenses to sell alcoholic beverages."Regular compliance checks remind both our community and the licensees how serious we are about strict enforcement, particularly of those laws affecting our county's young people," said Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman. "I am extremely proud of the work done and initiative taken by participating youth."

With assistance from deputies, CNET Drug Task Force and MADD, participating teenagers received training on how to help law enforcement conduct the checks. The team targeted convenience stores, bars and restaurants that had "all forms" of liquor licenses.

Of the 15 establishments checked, only two sold to minors. Those include: The Blue Iguana located at 113 W. Cherry, Nevada, Mo., which sold to the minor even after checking their ID, The Conoco at 1112 E Austin, Nevada, Mo, which did not ask for ID.

"These results are very reassuring. It shows that these types of compliance checks demonstrate that carding those who try to purchase alcohol in Vernon County is a top priority," said Peckman.
