INVESTIGATIONS

The primary objective of Criminal Investigations Unit is to conduct follow-up investigations of persons and property crimes that occur within Vernon County. This alleviates the Patrol Division from the crime scenes & time consuming follow up requirements and gives them the ability to respond to other calls for assistance. They investigate major crimes such as homicide, sexual battery, aggravated battery, child or elderly abuse, internet crimes, theft, fraud, domestic violence injunction violations, missing persons, and much more.

If you have a question on a case or would like to report a crime or have information on a crime you can call: (417) 448-5555.

ROAD PATROL

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is committed to the Sheriff’s philosophy of community oriented policing.  This philosophy allows officers to become more familiar with issues and problems within their community, and can address them on a more individualized basis. Patrol Officers are committed to building and maintaining problem solving partnerships within the community. In addition, patrol officers are committed to providing police services that are fair, impartial, and professional. They are the first response to any citizen’s call for assistance. In keeping with our community policing philosophy, officers regularly provide a wide variety of service to the community. We continue to expand on the traditional role of policing to meet the ever-growing needs of the people we serve.

SERVICE OF SUMMONS, CIVIL PROCESS AND SUBPOENAS

The sheriff is responsible for serving many of the summons, but not all of them. Personal service is the preferred method of service, and is required in certain cases.

JAIL AND COURT

In accordance with the State Constitution and Laws, the Sheriff is also the Chief Jailer of the County and is required to operate and maintain the jail. The new Sheriff's Office and Jail houses 82 prisoners.  Vernon County assists several other counties who are either over crowded or can not hold prisoners. Prisoners are housed from all over the state of Missouri at our new facility.

The sheriff or hisdesignee serves as the bailiff of the court, and upon request to thecourt. It is the bailiffs duty to assist in maintaining order anddecorum in the courtroom and to provide security and protection forjury proceedings and jury members as well as members of the court.
