Vernon County is located in the west central portion ofMissouri. As of 2000, the population was 20,454. Its county seat isNevada. The county was organized in 1855 and named for Col. MilesVernon state senator and veteran of the Battle of New Orleans. TheOffice of the Sheriff was established in 1855 and has long since been acorner stone in the county's history.

Currently the Sheriff's Office and Jail is house in a new state-of-the-art facility at 2040 East Hunter in Nevada, Mo.
